Overview: Thirty-five states have at least one program, such as a scholarship or grant, in statute to recruit teachers to underserved schools and/or shortage subject areas. Additionally, 10 states have at least one program in statute to provide financial incentives to currently licensed teachers to pursue additional licensing or endorsements to teach in underserved schools and/or shortage subject areas.
Additional Information: This collection includes scholarships, grants, stipends, tuition waivers and forgivable loans. Forgivable loan programs — also referred to as conditional loan or scholarship loan programs — are programs in which a state provides the student with a loan that is forgiven — in full or in part — subject to the student meeting certain requirements. They are unlike loan forgiveness programs, in which students take out loans that are subsequently forgiven — in full or in part — subject to meeting certain requirements.
